Dear all,
Please be reminded of your ICT homework for this weekend! E-mail your situational writing Unit 4 to me through your lead.com.sg
Here is a recap of what you have been introduced for the new topic on water the changes of states.
Solids have a definite shape and volume. The particles that make up a solid are closely packed together and do not have much space to move. Thus, solids keep their shape.
Liquids flow and do not have a definite shape. Liquids take the shape of their containers. The particles that make up a liquid are further apart than solids, and they can move around more readily. This allows liquids to flow and spread out.
Gases also flow and do not have a definite shape. The particles that make up gases are farther apart than liquids, so gases can spread out in all directions to take the whole space of a container.
When ice melts, it goes from a solid to a liquid. Heat causes the temperature of the ice to increase and particles to gain more energy. They are able to move faster and flow, causing a solid to change into a liquid.
When you pour liquid water into an ice cube tray and put it in the freezer, you will get ice, which is a solid. When water freezes, it loses heat and energy. Particles slow down and become more packed together. This causes liquids to change into solids. The freezing point of pure water is 0 degrees celcius.
Adding heat to water can cause it to change states. When a tea kettle full of liquid water is put on a stove, the temperature begins to rise. Particles gain more energy and are able to move and spread out more. When water boils, the liquid turns to a gas. This process is called evaporation. You may have observed that wet clothes will dry out if they are hung in a warm, sunny spot. The water in the clothes evaporates into the air.
Liquids can change into gases, but gases can also change into liquids. You would have noticed droplets of water that collect on the side of a cup or glass. Water vapor is a gas in the air and when it comes in contact with the cool glass, the temperature decreases. The particles lose energy, turning the gas into a liquid. This process is called condensation.
[ Earth Hour ]
Today is earth hour. From 8.30pm to 9.30pm, lets' play our part by switching off the lights for one hour. Save the earth by doing our part!

Term 2 Week 2
Dear all,
[ Learning Points of the Day! ]
- We learn about punctuations. It is important to pen down the correct punctuations in your daily work, especially for your composition writing. Remember the rules of punctuations. It can cost you marks. Hence, it is important we indicate the correct punctuation when needed.
- We learn about formation of words from root words. Words are important. New words are formed all the time with the ever expanding dictionary. Update your knowledge about words by reading widely. Some of you are using good vocabulary words in your composition writing. Keep it up.
- We are coming to an end of the topic of Reprouction in Humans.
All living things reproduce. Reproduction — the process by which organisms make more organisms like themselves — is one of the things that sets living things apart from nonliving things. But even though the reproductive system is essential to keeping a species alive, unlike other body systems it's not essential to keeping an individual alive.
In the human reproductive process, two kinds of sex cells are involved. The male sperm and the female egg or ovum meet in the female's reproductive system to create a new individual. Both the male and female reproductive systems are essential for reproduction
Humans, like other organisms, pass certain characteristics of themselves to the next generation through their genes, the special carriers of human traits. The genes parents pass along to their offspring are what make kids similar to others in their family, but they're also what make each child unique. These genes come from the father's sperm and the mother's egg, which are produced by the male and female reproductive systems.
About the Male Reproductive SystemMost species have two sexes: male and female. Each sex has its own unique reproductive system. They are different in shape and structure, but both are specifically designed to produce, nourish, and transport either the egg or sperm.
Unlike the female, whose sex organs are located entirely within the pelvis, the male has reproductive organs, or genitals, that are both inside and outside the pelvis. The male genitals include:
- the testicles
- the penis
What the Male Reproductive System DoesThe male sex organs work together to produce and release semen into the reproductive system of the female during sexual intercourse. The male reproductive system also produces sex hormones, which help a boy develop into a sexually mature man during puberty.
If a mature egg is in one of the female's fallopian tubes, a single sperm may penetrate it, and fertilization, or conception, occurs.
This fertilized egg is now called a zygote and contains 46 chromosomes — half from the egg and half from the sperm. The genetic material from the male and female has combined so that a new individual can be created. The zygote divides again and again as it grows in the female's uterus, maturing over the course of the pregnancy into an embryo, a fetus, and finally a newborn baby.
Female Reproductive System
The vagina connects with the uterus, or womb, at the cervix (which means neck). The cervix has strong, thick walls. The opening of the cervix is very small (no wider than a straw). During childbirth, the cervix can expand to allow a baby to pass.
The uterus is shaped like an upside-down pear, with a thick lining and muscular walls — in fact, the uterus contains some of the strongest muscles in the female body. These muscles are able to expand and contract to accommodate a growing fetus and then help push the baby out during labor.
At the upper corners of the uterus, the fallopian tubes connect the uterus to the ovaries. The ovaries are two oval-shaped organs that lie to the upper right and left of the uterus. They produce, store, and release eggs into the fallopian tubes in the process called ovulation.
There are two fallopian tubes, each attached to a side of the uterus. Within each tube is a tiny passageway no wider than a sewing needle. At the other end of each fallopian tube is a fringed area that looks like a funnel. This fringed area wraps around the ovary but doesn't completely attach to it. When an egg pops out of an ovary, it enters the fallopian tube. Once the egg is in the fallopian tube, tiny hairs in the tube's lining help push it down the narrow passageway toward the uterus.
When a baby girl is born, her ovaries contain hundreds of thousands of eggs, which remain inactive until puberty begins.
Toward the end of puberty, girls begin to release eggs as part of a monthly period called the menstrual cycle. Approximately once a month, during ovulation, an ovary sends only ONE tiny egg into one of the fallopian tubes.
Dear all,
Hope this presents a clearer summary for this topic. Parents, do take the time to also explain to your kids. This is also part of sexuality education which the students of primay 5 will receive later in the year. Remember that this topic is sensitive and we do not laugh or make fun of the terms.
Rest well and see you all tomorrow,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Making meaning of what you have learned
Dear all,
It is important to make meaning of what you have learned in school. It not only equips you with academic knowledge but also life skills and values.
As we get ready to wrap up the topics on Great Explorers (for english) and Reproduction in Humans (for science), we reflect on the key learning points. We learn about great explorers as this is part of our history and how the world evolves. New countries and lands are brought to our knowledge because of explorers who sail the world to uncover new places. Raffles is one such good example and as such, our modern history began with his discovery and contributions.
Reproduction in humans is an important topic and knowledge which every individual must know. It concerns the continuity of mankind to ensure we do not become extinct. Also, we learn the values of respecting females and males. Remember that we do not laugh or make fun of the terms in the topic. Now, you have a better understanding of how you came into this world.
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Motivating yourself
Wanted to show you this video today with regards to the lesson on Raffles. But as the projector is malfunctioned, you can view the video here as uploaded.
Here's a little something to encourage you. I know all of you know Justin Bieber. More than just contributing to the pop scene, one of his music videos touches the heart of millions through the message of caring and knowing that there are people out there who do not give up. I want to tell all of you that you should never give up in your life, especially in your studies and remember to stop once a while to do a good deed. Lets' move together as a class!

School Anniversary
Dear all,
[ LEARNING POINTS OF THE DAY ]
- The Japanese Occupation had a largely negative effect on the people of Singapore. We remember the event as part of our roots, our history and lessons to improve future generations.
- Great explorers possess the characteristic of determination. They are undaunted and strive for excellence.
[ REMINDERS ]
- Dictation Test Unit 4 Tomorrow. Please study hard!
I am heartened to see that for today, ALL of you have brought your social studies and english textbook. It is a much better improvement. Please keep it up consistently. Clas spirit is important and I want to see each and everyone of you motivating one another to regularly bring your materals for the lessons. Check your timetable regularly!
Please continue to work hard this term and treat your work seriously. One serious issue which I still observe is that many of you still tend to do your own work when the teacher is at the front explaining the lesson. It applies to all the lessons. Please give your 100%. The moment you read out the rules before each lesson of mine, you have already promised to give your best and listen attentively. Group points or not, make it a habit to stay focused and listen attentively. It is all for you! This aspect needs alot of practising and working on.
If you all can achieve 100% bringing your books, I am sure with time, we can also achieve 100% attention! Don't let me down!
Tomorrow, we celebrte our school's 27th anniversary with a mass and series of celebrations in the hall. Remember, we respect and be on our best behaviour in the hall.
As mentioned, there are changes to the class library. Here are the changes listed out.
1. Each pupils will borrow a book from the class library from either one of the english monitors.
2. English monitors will keep track of the books and you will sign out on the record list the book you borrowed and the date you borrowed it out. This is to ensure a proper system of keeping track of the books and for me to keep track how many books you have each read.
3. I am going to make the borrowing period of a book at 1 month. This is to encourage you to read the book with QUALITY. You should read it seriously and look out for vocabulary and composition writing ideas. Books are useful tools together with newspaper articles.
Next Friday, we will begin with the first group, Anselm's group, to present their newspaper article.
Remember, I want to encourage all members of the group to practise on their confidence by presenting their article. Just a simple short presenation that focuses on the MAIN POINTS OF THE ARTICLE and NEW VOCABULARY WORDS (with the given meanings) for the class to learn about.
Newspaper articles help us to learn about the current knowlege in the world to keep us updated and also to help us pick up good english tips.
That's all for now. See you all tomorrow.
Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Term 2 Week 1
Dear all,
The new timetable as promised. Do remember to bring your books and check your timetable everyday.
It is disappointing when half of the class did not finish / bring their composition Unit 3 for submission today. Please please work on submitting your work on time as these work need to be marked and returned to you on time. By practising, you will improve. So do take pride in your work and do your best.
[TODAY'S LEARNING POINTS]
- In English, we learned about great explorers who are people who travel the world in exploration of new ideas, artefacts, countries and people. Marco Polo is one good example who travelled from Italy to Asia in exploration.
- Sequencing is important in writing your composition and understanding passages. There must a flow of sequences. Another good example is the use of a timeline to represent the life of an individual.
- For Science, we are introduced to the topic of 'Reproduction in Humans'. We learned that living things reproduce to ensure continuity of their own kind. Internal fertilization takes place in the female for a baby to be produced and then given birth.
- Humans do not go through pollination. Babies are created when the sperm cell from the male fuses with the egg cell of the female.
- The umbilical cord helps to provide nutrients and oxygen from the mother to the baby and it also removes waste from the baby through the mother.
[REMINDERS]
- Hand up your composition homework together with the planning worksheet and your draft.
- Bring your science workbook on cycles and bring your missing worksheets to be filed in your english and science files.
Dear Parents,
I have told the students about the seriousness and importance of studying the topic 'Reproduction in Humans'. Please do not be alarmed if they do talk about the topic or ask questions about it. Do help to guide them and educate them at home. At no times, should they be making fun or passing rude comments about the topic of certain terms associated with human reproduction. I have already talked to the students and warned them. As such, if they are caught making fun or passing rude comments, I will deal with the students severely. I hope to seek your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr. Nelson Ong

Day 1 of March Holidays Supplementary
Dear all,
Day 1 of the extra lessons has ended.
RECAP OF DAY 1
We went through group quizzes on Science topics learned this year with a short recap on P4 topics like life cycles and functions of parts of a plant. Please remember to look through your past year topics from time to time to recap and revise.
For english, we went back to the basics to learn about grammar rules. Hope you have copied down the important rules in your vocab books and do take it out to revise and memorise from time to time. This is especially good for your grammar components and for writing a composition.
You can go to Youtube and search for 'Grammar Rock' if you want to learn more about the basic components of English.
FOR DAY 2
We will be fixing up your 3D model on cells and finishing up with the remaining components of your term 1 topics.
For English, we are going to look at writing and situational writing practices in the computer lab if it permits.
Work hard and play hard.
PS: For those making your way home on your own or coming to school on your own, please watch out for traffic and always be safe. Follow the safety rules and raise your hands while you cross the zebra crossing. Wait for cars to stop first! Nothing is more important than safety.
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Reminders and feedback for Term 1
Dear all,
Important reminders for the days!
- TRAVEL DECLARATION if you have not passed up.
- Test Paper for English. PARENTS' SIGNATURE!
- Edusave withdrawal form
- Extra Supplementary lessons for March Hols Form
- Social Studies TOTAL DEFENCE REFLECTIONS
[ ALL BY TOMORROW! ]
Dear Parents,
Tomorrow I will be giving the students their feedback slip for term 1. This is a general feedback for each of your to track their progress for term 1. I think that it is important for each of you to be kept updated of your child's progress in school and it is impossible for me to call each and everyone one at a time. As such, I will pass your child a feedback slip to let them and you know how they have fared for term 1 and what they can further improve on. Lets' work together to make term 2 better.
Please do not be too hard on your children's results for term 1. Primary 5 is a transition phase from Primary 4. Topics are more and get increasingly more difficult. I understand that some of the students do feel pressurized and demoralized that their results are not ideal. Do understand that there is a first time for everything. It is in a way, good that the students know that primary 5 work is not that simple and this is the standard for PSLE that we want to prepare them for. As such, they can then take up challenges and be self discipline to work towards excelling and doing better the next time around. It is comforting that the common test does not count as part of the overall results but please take the chance to work on your child's weaknesses and develop your child to improve.
We will take it step by step and set a realistic target for your child to work on for their next major assessment (SA1) and this is reflected on their feedback slip. Most importantly, do MOTIVATE AND ENCOURAGE THEM. I think they need all our motivation and encouragement. I can only do so much in school. When at home, they do want to know that you all care despite all our scoldings, naggings and constant reminders.
Dear Students,
You must be able to understand that all parents and teachers are playing our part to prepare you for your PSLE. It is never too early as we need to set our foundation in place. Every week you will hear my constant reminder. To care for you is better than not to show any care and concern at all. So take all scoldings, naggings and feedback as your improvement messages!
If you feel pressurized and stressed, do not be too alarmed. If you are feeling that way, it means that you want to do your best and as such, you will feel that way at times. Take a deep breath, calm yourself down and take breaks at time. Do not overwork yourself. We work hard, reap our rewards and then we play hard.
As term 1 draws to a close, do remember these important points.
- WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF AT SA1? END OF P5? AND END OF P6? What do you want to do with your next phase of life (Secondary school)? Start planning ahead.
- SELF DISCIPLINE is important in order to achieve your targets. with no self discipline, we can never concentrate in putting our best forward.
- RULE #1. WE ARE A FAMILY! We need to work together. Friends are important. We cheer for them for good things done and not jeer at them. CLASS SPIRIT AND TEAM SPIRIT is important. Cheer for your class, cheer for your friends. We are in this together, ALL 35 of US!
- If Alan can achieve and improve on his english, so can everyone of you. Nick Vjucic and even the characters in our news stimulus article today are worse off and they do not have limbs or sight but they still push forward to make full meaning of their lives. SO STOP complaining about what cannot be done and work on what can be done. We can do it if we put our 100% effort (RULE #5)
It's been a tough 10 weeks of term 1. Term 2 will zoom by quickly. Recharge and be prepared to work hard again.
Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Never give up!
Dear all,
Never give up even if you have not done well. The worst that you can do is to give up totally and decide you do not want to try again. In life, we will meet many obstacles. No one is perfect. No one can sustain greatness all the time. We will meet roadblocks. But through these, we learn to improve. We learn that if we fall again, we will pick ourselves up and try again, knowing that one day we will meet our target and reach the end point where we want to be.
So bear this question in mind.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES AT SA1?
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES AT THE END OF P5?
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES AT THE END OF P6?
Start aiming now. Start making your dreams come true.
RULE #1. We are a family.
As such, we are in this together. I am not going to stop until I achieve my 100% passes at least! Then we can all plan to progress to aiming for our Bs and hopefully, As. It can be done.
Take Alan as a good example. He has achieved his results because of his hard work. He is conscientious, always asks questions and takes pride in his daily work. He is never late with work and he does it constantly.
Everyone can do well if they are willing to give their 100% best effort (RULE #5)
The rules help you to remind yourselves that dreams can come true. Results can be achieved if you are willing to go the extra mile. Never regret, so give your best. Let CA1 be your wake up call if you have not done well.
The transition from P4 to P5 is not easy indeed. Topics get more difficult. New components are tested. All the more, you need to put in effort. Even if I do not follow you up to P6, I do hope to see all of you being proud of their 6 years of school life and to come running to me on the day of your PSLE results to tell me you have achieved your targets.
You have only 3 terms left to pull up your socks and strive for your best. In 3 terms, you will be facing PSLE and the journey to the next level.
I will end off here with a short fable and one that you are familiar of.
The Hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. "I have never yet been beaten," said he, "when I put forth my full speed. I challenge any one here to race with me."
The Tortoise said quietly, "I accept your challenge."
"That is a good joke," said the Hare; "I could dance round you all the way."
"Keep your boasting till you've beaten," answered the Tortoise. "Shall we race?"
So a course was fixed and a start was made. The Hare darted almost out of sight at once, but soon stopped and, to show his contempt for the Tortoise, lay down to have a nap. The Tortoise plodded on and plodded on, and when the Hare awoke from his nap, he saw the Tortoise just near the winning-post and could not run up in time to save the race. Then said the Tortoise: Perseverance wins the race!
If you persevere and put in hard work, rewards will come to you eventually. :)
