Introduction to Energy

Dear all,

As we come to the end of the introduction to energy, let us recap on the key points you need to know:

  • Energy is defined as the ability to do work.
  • Energy can be transferred.
  • The main source of energy is the sun.
  • One of the important processes in this topic is photosynthesis.
  • Photosynthesis is when the plant makes food, taking in carbon dioxide, light and water while it produces oxygen and sugar.
  • Excess sugar is transferred downwards by the phloem tubes.
Dear Parents,

What I am adopting for each topic is to end off with an open-ended question and going through of the answers with the students. They are to record down the question and answers (accompanied with the concepts) in their exercise book for Science. Do go through the questions and important points that I get them to pen down for each lesson in the book. It will be useful for them.

As seen today, the knowledge and link of past year topics is extremely important. Energy can be related to digestive system and cells when I talked about energy from food and transfer of energy from one organism to another.

Another important strategy of learning Science is to make use of the relevance of everyday life scenarios. More often that not, questions that come out make use of everyday life scenarios to test the students. As such, students must be able to not just focus on the technical aspects of the questions but to also relate happenings around us to science concepts.

Example:

The ice cream cake that we buy to eat is able to keep the ice cream cold and solid even after a long time. Why?

The layer of crust, sponge or biscuits around the ice cream in the middle contains holes which contains air bubbles. Air bubbles absorb the heat from the surroundings but since air is a poor conductor of heat, it does not conduct the heat to the ice cream as quickly. As such, the ice cream can remain frozen and in its solid form longer.

Homework:

Complete your supplementary unit 1 english worksheet by tomorrow.

You would have received your spelling list for the year. 12 words for each spelling with some additional words to be given by me. Study hard for it! No excuses to fail it! Parent, do go through the words with the kids. Spelling is to be administered every Thursday.

Have you brought your Health Booklets? It should be submitted by tomorrow.

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong
