Biodegrable and Non-Biodegrable

Dear all,

We learn about biodegradable and non-biodegradable items today as the main knowledge learnt.

Biodegradable --> objects that can be broken down easily into the ground
examples: Wood, plastic, paper

Non-biodegradable --> objects that CANNOT be broken down easily into the ground
examples: ceramics, plastic

There are three types of pollution, namely Air, Water and Land Pollution.

Decomposers break organisms or objects down into smaller pieces.
examples: Fungi, Bacteria

Decomposers take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. They are useful for the soil as they provide nutrients and fertilize the soil.

However, decomposers also take up oxygen in the water and compete with live organisms for oxygen, decreasing the amount of oxygen in the water.

Oil spills block out the top layer of water. Oil floats on top of water and it prevents oxygen and sunlight from reaching the inside of the water, killing the water organisms. Sometimes, oil coats the leaves and prevents the leaves from photosynthesizing (cannot get sunlight) and from transpiring and respiring with the stomata being blocked.

Remember to complete your Science homework (Open-ended revision paper section) by FRIDAY.

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong
