Happy Teachers' Day

Dear all,

A very busy week indeed with camp and the teachers' day celebrations. I hope you have all enjoyed yourselves with the camp and today's celebrations.

[P5 Camp]

I know some of you enjoyed the camp for the others. But regardless of how much you enjoyed, congratulations in surviving the camp. I am glad I had 100% attendance and even with 2 of you who were sick and injured, you still persisted on. Good attitude shown! Like what rule #1 says, we survived it as a family.

The teamwork, outdoor survival skills and values learnt would helped you greatly as a person and even as you spent 3 days without your parents and comforts of your home, I am sure you would become a more independent person in some ways.

[Teachers' Day]

Thank you for all the wishes and presents. Greatly appreciated. But the greatest gift would be achieving 100% passes for all subjects for end of the year. I do hope you will all put in your best effort and decide for yourselves what you want to achieve by the end of the year. SA2 revision starts now. Please start revising on your Science P3 and P4 work.

[Extra Supplementary Lessons]

2 days of extra supplementary lessons will be conducted during the September Holidays on Monday and Tuesday.
7.30am - 9.30 am = Chinese (All to attend Mdm Lily Lim's lesson even for those in Mr Lucas Tong's class)
9.30am - 10am = Break
10am - 12pm = English + Science
12pm - 1.30pm = Mathematics

Please bring along the story book and the mindmap on Monday. We will be concentrating mostly on your English Oral practice for next term.

[Feedback for Term 3]

Dear parents,

I would have given your child a note which states their individual feedback for the term. Do take a look and ask your kids for it. You can attach it to your diary and put it on your board or study table to remind you what you need to improve upon. Motivate yourself and study hard alright!

Enjoy your weekend and remember to study hard!

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong.

Age of the Dinosaurs

Dear all,

It is finally the 9th week. One more week to go before term 3 officially ends. It's your P5 Camp next week and the briefing has been done today. Hope you have taken note of the important details and please do not bring along your handphones. If you need to bring to contact your parents when they come pick you up, you can pass the phone to the teachers and we will leave it in the general office for safekeeping for the 3 days that you are away.

Please take care of your health this week. Drink plenty of water and keep yourself well and strong. I do want you to enjoy the camp.

[Age of the Dinosaurs]

We have started on a new topic for today on the topic of Science Fiction stories and writers. One such topic was the dinosaurs. We know that dinosaurs did exist in the past. But what really caused their extinction? Until today, scientists are not able to find out the real reason behind it. As such, we can only gather clues and make our own judgement. Here is the video we watched today. It is 40 odd minutes long. You can finish watching it during your free time.

Moral of the story learnt from today's passage on Jurassic Park:
We do not recreate nature. Let nature take its course!

[Extra reading materials + Mind Map]

In encouraging everyone to read widely and critically, books from the public library have been loaned out to you. Do read them and apply the skills I have taught you. Your task would be to create and design a mind map to consolidate your learning from the book. Here is a sample of the mind map.

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Post National Day Week

Dear all,

Hope you had an enjoyable long weekend. It's week 8 now and there are many things to be thankful for.

[Science CA2]

My goal for the class in terms of academic was to have 100% passes for every single subject, not just the subjects I am teaching. Today, we have finally taken that small step to achieving this goal.

Congratulations on 100% passes for Science CA paper with 10 As. It has taken 3 terms just to achieve this goal but to see everyone so happy about it is the greatest joy. Continue to keep this up. There is motivation and praise for all of you but most importantly, don't be complacent. Continue to work hard. Science is one subject in which you can really relate to real life scenarios. It is interesting to learn about Science through experiments and situations but it is difficult to translate what you have learnt to writing. You do know that language is your greatest area for improvement so do work on it through practice. Pick up the pen and assessment books and continue to practise, especially for section B.

Remember what I have told you, "what you have today may not be there tomorrow. You have to work hard for what you want and to achieve your goals."

[National Day]

We are also thankful for our nation's birthday. We give thanks for the fact that we are 47 years old this year and our country is peaceful and stable. As a citizen of Singapore, never forget your roots.

[Class photo Taking]

A picture speaks a thousand words. We are definitely thankful for each individual that make up 5SD3 2012. Remember rule #1 always as you end the year in 1 term's time. Forge friendships that will be with you for life as you look back at the class photo. It's been a pleasure this far, teaching the whole lot of you.

[Reminders]

The P5 Camp is around the corner, due to take place on the 27-29 August. You would have received your letter with the items list. You can get some of the items from the NE Show fun pack so do make use of it. Parents, do work the list out with your kids and tick the items you want to buy so that you can give it to the vendor on the stipulated date.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I will be accompanying the kids and I, together with the great team of teachers, will watch out for their safety. Our number 1 priority is their safety in addition to the outdoor skills and fun they will acquire.

Please pass up the consent form tomorrow as stipulated in the consent form.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

National Day Celebrations

Dear all,

The blog has been stagnant for a while. I am back to update it again,. With the CA2 week over and the marking done, I can finally draw some time to provide updates.

[National Day Celebrations]

Cheers to the class for displaying true resilient and family spirit in competing in the games today. Good job on the 3rd position as a class. The prize you have won is known as the traditional game, Kuti Kuti. If you would like to know how to play, you can visit these 2 links here.

Kuti Kuti 1
Kuti Kuti 2

Thank you to those who have helped me for today's P6 games. I appreciate your willingness and persistence despite the hot weather. I am comforted to know that many of you are actually not only telling one another about rule #1 (we are a family) but also practising it. This is the most comforting gesture I have seen from all of you, that you do what you say. Actions speak louder than words and I hope that you continue to bond as a class and help one another out.

[CA 2]

There are both positive and negative to look at for this CA2. English was rather disappointing. It was one step back from the overall results of SA1. This in term of overall passes and overall results. The highest was only a 69. No doubt, the paper was somewhat more difficult but still, the most disappointing part was when many of you missed out the skills and concepts I have taught you in daily lessons. I have repeated over and again about certain key parts to watch out for and the grammar rules. I have also told you to highlight key words and draw arrows. I modeled and showed you how to do it for many of the practices we have done but yet, many of you did not heed the advice. It is indeed one step back from my goal of having all of you getting 100% passes. I am not going to stop until I reached this goal. Hopefully, this can be achieved in SA2!  Remember to not give up and continue to persist. Most importantly, you must have your motivation and belief that you can pass.

On to the more positive note, the science results are hugely satisfactory this time around. You have truly taken notice of my advice and skills. There is a huge improvement in your open-ended answers. I will share greater news with you when I give you back your papers next Monday. :)

[Olympics 2012]

Here's leaving you with some inspirational stories about the Olympics.

Resilience in getting back up to complete despite the injury

Man with no legs competes in Olympics

Happy National Day and enjoy the long weekend. :)

Yours Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong
