Carbon Dioxide and Limewater

Dear all,

Today, we carried out the experiment on limewater, burning and breathing out. Our experiments have shown that the concepts of carbon dioxide turning limewater chalky and burning and respiring gives out carbon dioxide hold true.

I have also given out the report books. Please get them checked and signed. You can make a copy for yourself but remember to put the slips back in. It is time to reflect on your results and remarks given. I believe all of you have weaknesses to work on. Some of you felt sad about your results and I am truly glad about that as it shows that you are beginning to feel deeply about yourself and your academics. Make the necessary changes and actions to improve. Everyone has room for improvements to excel and reach your best abilities. Don't give up!

Adaptations for obtaining sunlight

Dear all,

As we recap on today's main learning points for Science, remember to bring your English files tomorrow and your Science workbooks. English retest for spelling is also scheduled for tomorrow.

  • We learnt about creepers and climbers.
  • Creepers grow along the ground, spreading out their shoots as much as possible to obtain sunlight. One example is the carpet grass.
  • Climbers have tendrils and clasping roots to climb onto supports like fences, wooden poles or even other plants with strong stems to obtain sunlight.
  • Tendrils are special leaves or stems of plants that have threadlike shape to climb and twine around objects for support.
  • Concept here is that plants grow towards the direction of the sunlight. They need to grow upright.
  • Examples of climbers include the morning glory plant.
  • Then, we talked about aquatic plants and how they can be classified into fully submerged and partially submerged.
  • Water plants have different structural adaptations to help them survive in water. They need to stay upright to reach for the sunlight.
  • Some have waxy leaves in order to prevent water from soaking it and pulling it down. it enables the plant to stay afloat above the water. Example include the water hyacinth and water lily.
  • Some have swollen leaf stalks that contain air spaces to help trap air and allow the plant to float on top of the water. One example is the water hyacinth.
  • Concepts here is that air is lighter than water and thus, allows the plant to float on water.
  • Some plants can trap air bubbles to allow them to stay upright and reach for sunlight in the water while some have spongy leaves and stems to allow them to float.
These are the important points for today's lesson.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Week 10 - last week of term 2

Dear all,

We have finally come to the end of term 2. Half a year has just passed by in a twinkling of an eye. As promised, I have researched and come up with the list of schools and their entry points for this year (2013 intake). For next year's intake, the points usually will not vary much. These are the points you should aim for.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Click on the links above. For next year's intake, the information is not out yet. I will update if I have any information. You can look at one of the files to see what the strengths of some schools are.

Reminders:

  • Use your hands campaign is on this Thursday. Bring a rag each and a pail for each group.
  • Dictation Unit 8 is on this Thursday.
  • Bring your June holidays supplementary lessons acknowledgement forms for submission.

Post Examination Week 9

Dear all,

You would have English Paper 1 and Booklet B returned to you for parents' signature. Also, you have all the Science papers returned to you for signature. Please get them signed. Booklet A is still with me for analysis and I will return to you tomorrow. :)

Generally, I have not much worries for both the subjects. My lowest for both subjects are around 42 - 43 so there is much hope to definitely pull up the marks. It can be done so long as you all don't lose faith and keep trying. Remember to persevere and tell yourself that for the next 3 months, it is hard work that counts. In your 12 years of life, I am only asking for 3 more months! Do your BEST!

Given the difficulty of the papers, I am satisfied with the results although English could have been much better. We did lower the number of failures from CA1 (14) to SA1 (10) which is a baby step in getting my 100% passes. We will continue onward and not backward for prelims and PSLE.

The message I want to convey here is that as long as you do not lose your faith and turn your results around through hard work, it can be achieved. I have seen improvements in many of you and I cannot ask for more as long as you try your best. Remember my encouragement to you - You may fail 99 times but that does not mean that the 100th time, you will still fail. If it takes you many failures to achieve a pass, the failures are worth it if it helps you to learn and be the best you can be. :) I will be here with all of you every step of the way. Hang in there. We work hard first then we play hard later!

Two subjects you need to really pull up are Chinese and Mathematics. Aim higher and try to hit 40s and 50 and above by prelim. Strive hard!

Today, we started on the next English practice on grammar and vocabulary. Here are the key points learnt:

  • 'Each', 'Every', 'One of'', 'Either of', 'Neither of', 'No one' are all in the singular form so you should use the verb 'IS' or 'WAS' to fit these words.
  • e.g EACH of the boys IS having a bath. EVERYONE takes the bus home. Either of the boys is to run the race.
  • 'IF I' and 'I WISH' is followed by the past perfect tense of the verb after those words.
  • e.g IF I HAD DONE THIS, IF I HAD COMPLETED MY WORK ON TIME, I WISH I HAD TAKEN BETTER CARE, I WISH I HAD GONE HOME.
This coming Friday is a holiday. There is no school. Letters for June extra lessons will be given out tomorrow. :)

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

The end of SA1

Dear all,

You have come to the end of your SA1. However, the hard work has not ended just yet. It has only begun. Based on your results, it is time to start planning and adjusting your studying and revision effort in order to close the gap and pass / score better.

The English paper is no doubt difficult. I do not fault you for not being able to pass. However, you should not be scoring too low. There is alot of careless mistakes and mistakes that are being made despite me going through the skills with you. It is indeed disappointing to see so many of you failing to do well for the questions I have gone through with you so many times.

The effort you have made in planning through the pre-reading thinking activity is indeed commendable. I see a larger portion of you making the effort to plan and write down. Continue to use this method and don't give up! Check for your tenses please! A major error for your comprehension open-ended.

Breakdown of English SA1

Oral /30
Listening /20
Paper 1 /55
Paper 2 /95

Total: /200 which will then be rounded to 100%

Oral and paper 1 results are not in yet and will only be known next week.

On to better news, MUCH improvement in your Science as compared to CA1. This time around, the standard is slightly easier although it is still a somewhat difficult paper, especially for open-ended. If you have been following my tips and revision, you should at least get a pass!

When I look back at this term, your behaviour is much better as compared to last term. But, you need to really focus when I am going through practice papers. I do notice that most of you tend to drift off and start talking among yourselves. Thus, you will not be able to catch the important pointers that I give to you. There is only 1 term left and you need to focus and really work for it. Better focus next term is needed. I need to get my best term out of all of you next term. Make it the best term for me and do the very best you can do.

Dear Parents and All Students,

You would have gotten your PSLE intructions booklet. Please look through and familiarize yourself. If there are any questions, please ask me. Bring it on Monday. I will go through in greater details. Also, there will be a secondary talk as stated in the letters given out to you. Do go through and make your best effort to attend. It is time to start planning for your secondary school choice. Log onto the e-career portal and if you are unable to do so, please INFORM ME on MONDAY so that I can make the necessary arrangements for you. There are a few open houses from the various secondary schools. Please look them up at the notice board and if interested, get your parents to research and visit the secondary schools for the open houses.

You can click the link below to look at the lists of secondary school choices
HERE

Also, please bear in mind what I encouraged you the other day. You must be sensible to work hard and know what you want. Lately, there have been a couple of bad peer influences. I have heard of cases of friends asking friends not to study and just play because this is what they do at home. You should know better than to trust others willingly. When it comes to studies, it is ultimately you, yourself, taking the papers. You do not know if you friends are tricking you and for all you know, they might be busy studying hard at home. In the end, if you choose not to study, you will suffer. We cannot stop people from saying certain things, but you need to know right from wrong and choose your friends wisely. There are certain students in class whom I am disappointed with for leading your friends astray. You need to set a good example and influence your friends in the correct manner. Parents, do talk through with your kids and understand more about the friends they are making in school. Advise them on positive influences and working hard together rather than going astray. Motivate yourself!

My rules still apply even though I might not go through them daily in class.
RULE #1 We are a family! Let's do this together!!!
RULE #5 Do your best in everything you do! Study hard! and be the BEST person you can be.

Notes for Science SA1

Dear all,

Here is the recap of the pointers for Science tomorrow:

Please go through what you have learnt plus your past year topics. Below are just some important pointers for you to take note of too.

  • Examples of friction
  • Concepts of friction (Especially when two objects collide together)
  • Direction of friction and gravity. Friction acts in the opposite direction of moving objects where else gravity acts downwards.
  • Elastic spring force
  • Hardness and Strength. Hardness is the ability to withstand scratches. Strength is the ability to withstand weight without breaking.
  • When melting, the temperature remains at 0 degrees celcius until melting is completed.
  • Light is reflected from the object into our eyes. Take note of the arrows in a periscope.
  • When we move upwards, there is decrease in kinetic energy and increase in gravitational potential energy.
  • When we move downwards, there is an increase in kinetic energy and decrease in gravitational potential energy.
  • Seeds need warmth for germination.
  • Dead matter decompose and provide nutrients for soil. Decaying / decomposition takes in oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide.
  • Habitats of Dugong is in the ocean/sea.
  • Take note of how many food chains there are in a food web.
  • Trace the food producer first and where it ends up at to calculate the number of food chains. Start with producer and end with the predator only.
  • Take note of the food pyramid. Producers are the most at the start!
  • Adaptations for breathing in water. The different breathing parts (Refer to textbook and workbook plus practice papers and topical worksheets)
  • Parts of a flower like stigma and anther. Pollination and fertilisation.
  • Parts of the crab and penguin. Penguin has flippers to move in water but its beaks cannot tear flesh of prey. Instead, it helps pick up prey to swallow whole. Crabs have 6 middle legs for walking and two bottom legs for swimming. It has a pair of pincers to grab and grip its prey.
  • Friction over different surfaces. The more force there is, the more friction it has to overcome.
  • Air occupies space.
  • Towel must be absorbent and retain water. Does not allow water to pass through it easily. That makes a good towel.
  • When towel is heavier, it has more water.
  • More humidity slows down rate of evaporation.
  • Animals move in packs to hunt. It is a behavioural adaptation. Makes it difficult to attack them while they are in packs.
  • Deoxygenated blood = blood rich in carbon dioxide
  • Oxygenated blood = blood rich in oxygen
Read through your textbook, workbook, topical worksheets and practice papers please!

ALL THE BEST! Last minute crash course revision will be held tomorrow morning from 6.50am - 7.10am in the classroom.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

English SA1 Exam

Dear all,

All the best for your English Examinations tomorrow. You would have copied down the notes I have given to you in class just now. Here is just a quick recap of some of the important pointers for tomorrow:

Grammar

Verb - Noun - Verb (Present and Plural)

made him eat the cake.
made him run around the park.

to - verb (present and plural)

to eat, to take, to run, to study

Neither .......... nor ................
Either ........... or ...............

Look at the second subject for plural or singular

Neither Peter nor the kid is able to kick the ball into the net.
Either Tim or the boys have to eat the cake.

Should/Shall/Can/Could/Will/Would/May/Might + VERB

The verb that comes after that is Present and Plural.

should complete, can finish, may eat, will study.

Subject (Noun), together or along with ............. ,

Look at the first subject (noun) for singular or plural.

Please use your pre-reading thinking activity to help you for your comprehension mcq and open-ended. Spend about 10-15mins to plan and read before going through the passage and then moving on to answer your questions.

Check for tenses please!

Same goes for your comprehension cloze. Please read the passage first and make meaning of the characters, main event and place. Then highlight the key words and draw arrows. Finally, check for grammar clues (singular/plural/present/past).

All the best! Make full use of the time given to you.

Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Revision Week

Dear all,

4 more papers to go and it is time to really revise hard on them. Today, we finished on your Science Practice Paper MCQ questions. 30 questions but we took time to go through which questions are important and the concept and skills to solve the questions. Some of the key points to take note of:

  1. Based on the food pyramid, draw out the producers and order of consumers based on what is given in the food chain or web. The animal at the bottom of the pyramid is always the greatest in amount at the start. The animal at the top of food pyramid is always the least in amount at the start.
  2. Exposed surface area, amount of wind, level of humidity and temperature affect the rate of evaporation.
  3. The image we see in the mirror is inverted and opposite.
  4. Blood going out from our body to the lungs to the windpipe to the nose is rich in carbon dioxide.
  5. All magnets (temporary or permanent) have South and North Poles.
  6. Birds that move in the water have webbed feet to help them move quickly. (Modified limbs)
  7. The hardness of an object is its ability to withstand scratches!
  8. The strength of an object is its ability to not break easily.
  9. New cells replace damaged cells.
  10. The faster the speed, the greater the kinetic energy.
  11. When an object moves upwards, the gravitational potential energy increases while the kinetic energy decreases.
  12. When an object moves downwards, the gravitational potential energy decreases while the kinetic energy increases.
  13. Caterpillars and butterflies are ONE organism of the same kind! Mealworms and beetles are ONE organism of a same kind! Wriggler and Mosquito are ONE organism of a same kind!
  14. Gravity acts downwards on an object.
  15. Friction acts in the opposite direction of a moving object.
  16. The more force to move an object, the more friction there is.
  17. Shoes need more friction to help us walk. Slides of the playground need less friction to help us move down smoothly without getting injured.
  18. The lesser the friction, the more kinetic energy and further the distance moved.
Please bring your Unit 7 files for English, SA1 Practice papers for English and Science and Science Work book next week!

Thanks,
Happy revision!
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Tips for Paper 1

Dear all,

As you sit for you paper 1 tomorrow, here are some important tips to take note of:

Situational Writing

You have been exposed to the format of Note, Letter writing, Letter of Complaint/Compliment, Report writing and Write-up.

Structure of informal letter and note

Dear ___________________,

State the purpose. Points 1 - 3 in the first paragraph.

Points 4 - 6 in the next paragraph.

Name

Structure of a formal letter

Dear ___________________,

State the purpose. Points 1 - 3 in the first paragraph.

Points 4 - 6 in the next paragraph.

Yours sincerely,
Name

Structure of Letter of Compliment

Your purpose would be to praise / thank someone or a group of people, as such the language should be formal and positive.

Date:

Dear (name),

Title (Underline the title)

I am writing this letter of compliment to praise ............ for his ............ I was at (place) at (time) on (day). Points 1 - 3

Points 4 - 6
Yours sincerely,
(name)

Examples of a good title:

Letter Of Compliment Of The Positive Work Attitude Of Mr Tan

Letter Of Compliment Of Your Company

Letter Of Compliment Of The Quality Of Your Products

A good way to start off your letter of compliment is "I am writing this letter to thank/praise/compliment (name of the person) for his/her (what the action/act is). I was at (place) on (date) at (time)."

e.g I am writing this letter to thank Mr Paul Tan for his kindness in returning my lost wallet. I was at ABC Library on 2 May at 4pm.

Remember, you need to start this way to have a flow to the story and writing. You always introduce the time, place, setting and characters first before elaborating the main event and then conclude.

Structure of Letter of Complaint

*note that the word 'complain' = verb (action word) and 'complaint' = noun

Date:

Dear (name),

Title (Underline the title)

I am writing this letter to complain about ............ for his ............ I was at (place) at (time) on (day). Points 1 - 3

Points 4 - 6

Yours sincerely,
(name)

Examples of good title:

Letter Of Complaint Of The Work Attitude Of Mr Tan

Letter Of Complaint Of Your Company

Letter Of Complaint Of The Quality Of Your Products

A good way to start off your letter of compliment is "I am writing this letter to complain about (name of the person) for his/her (what the action/act is). I was at (place) on (date) at (time)."

e.g I am writing this letter to complain about Miss Francine Lee for her rude behaviour towards a customer at your store. I was at XYZ Shop on 4 May at 12pm when the incident happened.

Structure of Report Writing

Date:

Dear (name),

Title (Underline)

I was at (place) at (time) on (day) when an accident/incident took place. Points 1 - 3.

Point 4 - 6
Reported by: (name)
(position if any)

Examples of good title:

Report On An Accident Along Hougang Avenue 1

Report On An Accident Involving Paul Tan

Report On An Incident At The Canteen

Report On A Robbery At ABC Shop

You need to state the purpose for the report writing. Your title is your purpose as such your title needs to be grammatically correct and specific. A good way to start off your report writing is "I was at (place) on (date) at (time) when the incident/crime/accident happened."

e.g I was at XYZ Shop on 4 May at 12pm when the robbery happened.

Example of Letter Of Compliment

*Written from the point of view of a parent

Date: 4 May 2012

Dear Principal of ABC Primary School,

Letter Of Compliment Of ABC Primary School's Extra Chinese Lessons

I am writing this letter to compliment your school for the extra Chinese lessons. My son, Robin Chong of 5C, is attending the lessons at the school hall every Wednesday from 2pm - 4pm and he greatly enjoys the lessons. The lessons have helped him improve his Chinese language through the use of drama and music to teach Chinese.

The instructors have been very patient and understanding towards my son and he often tells me how happy he is when he comes home after the lessons. I am happy to see that he has improved in his test results for term 3 and would like to request for you to continue with the classes until next year. More classes could be opened up for the lower primary students so that they can also benefit from the lessons. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs Chong See Wen

Structure of write-up

Dear _________________,

State the purpose. Points 1 - 3 in the first paragraph.

Points 4 - 6 in the next paragraph.

Name

Position if any.

Skills to take note when doing your situational writing.

1. Read the question first
2. Identify the format of the situational writing and note the structure you should use!
3. Identify and write down your role and who you are writing as.
4. Identify your audience and the tone of language you should use.
5. Read the passage/note/advertisement

  • Always remember your role that you are writing as and who you writing to (your audience)
If it is a formal memo, letter or note, you need not start with "How are you?" Your tone of writing and language must be formal and to the point. Do not add in  informal speeches or any short forms. Do not write as if you are writing to a friend or penpal. It must be formal if it required.

  • Do not ever use short forms in your writing.
  • State the purpose in the first sentence.
This is important. Your purpose of writing must be clearly stated in the first sentence as that is the most important part to what your note/letter/report/memo is about.

  • Set paragraphs for your writing with two finger spacing from the left hand margin to clearly indicate paragraphing.
  • Be straight to the point and do not add in unnecessary details or your own details! Follow the points given in the question strictly.

For your composition, if you want the safer option, stick to picture composition which is easier to comprehend. Look at the details in the picture and cover the details such as PLACE, TIME, CHARACTERS INVOLVED and WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND WHY THEY ARE DOING THE ACTIONS. Give a solution and possible lesson to be learnt.

Good ways to start off your composition:

The scorching rays of the blazing sun shone through the sky as I made my way home after a tiring day in school. I was famished and looked forward to having my lunch at home.

Good way to end off your composition:

This incident would forever be etched into my memories.

Check your tenses. You should be using past tense as much as possible. The stories are taking place in the past. Check your spelling and stick to simple words if you are in doubt and not able to spell properly. Do not risk getting your spelling wrong. Lesser mistakes are better than having too many mistakes while you try hard to impress.

ALL THE BEST EVERYONE :)

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Week 7 - SA1 Examinations

Dear all,

We are right on the last lap to your SA1 examinations which will begin on Thursday. Here is a recap of the important points for today:

English

We focused solely on English today with the going through of your Unit 7 Supplementary worksheet. We learn a few new rules for Synthesis and Transformation such as:

Because of .......
Due to .............
In spite of ..........
Despite .............

After these words, we can use 'the fact that'.
Examples
Because of the fact that he was tired, he did not finish the housework.
Due to the fact that it was raining heavily, the cars moved slowly on the road.
In spite of the fact that he was the smallest boy in class, he could lift the heavy weights.
Despite the fact that he was sick, he completed the run.

Much to is followed by a 'pronoun' and 'noun'. This is the grammar structure.
Examples
Much to his annoyance.........
Much to my anger..........
Much to her happiness...........
Much to the boys' excitement...........

Pronouns : 'my', 'her', 'his', 'their', 'our', Peter's, Tom's, the boys', Father's.............

In view of your SA1 preparations, I will be having supplementary lessons for both English and Science this coming Friday from 1pm - 3.30pm. There is no supplementary tomorrow as I will be involved in the P5 Oral examinations. Thank you!

Adaptations Part II

Dear all,

As this weekend approaches, it is time to start on your homework of your Science Revision Practice Paper. I want to see all of the papers passed up on Monday so that I can mark and we can go through next week. Time is precious! Lets' press on for the last lap to your SA1.

Here is a recap of what we have covered today:

Science

We touched on the topic of adaptations for breathing in water and it can be summarized as follow:

Gills: fish, shrimps, tadpoles and damselfly nymph

Gill chambers: crabs and mudskippers

Air tubes: wriggler (larvae of a mosquito), water stick insect and water scorpions

Air bubbles: Water beetles and Water spiders

Lungs and blowholes: Dolphins and Whales

Special nostrils: Dugong

These are structural adaptations that allow the animals to breathe underwater, taking in oxygen and giving out carbon dioxide through the process of respiration.

Moving on, we talked about adaptations for movement in the water. The bodies of most aquatic animals are streamlined (narrow at the two ends and broad in the middle). This shape enables them to move quickly underwater.

They also have modified limbs such as webbed feet, flippers and fins to help them move quickly underwater.

Webbed feet: Platypus, chicks, ducks and sea otters

Flippers: turtles, seals and sea lions

Finally, we talk about adaptations to moving in the air. Not all birds can fly. All flying animals have wings. Birds have well developed wings that are strong enough to help them fly. They also have a streamlined body shape to move easily through the air. Feathers are also an essential part of the body that also help keep the birds warm. Feathers make light but strong wings.

Key questions and examples:

  • Compared to the puffer fish and seahorse, the shark has the best shape to move quickly through the water as it has a streamlined body shape as compared to the vertical shape of the seahorse and the round shape of the pufferfish which slow down the movement of these two animals when travelling underwater.

  • Although birds have feathers, not all birds can fly. The wings of a chicken and ostrich help both birds to balance themselves while the wings of an eagle and hawk help them to fly up high into the sky. The beak of a chicken is mostly suited to pick up worms and grains but the beak of an eagle is strong enough to tear the flesh of a prey. Claws of a chicken helps it to dig up the soil for its prey while the claws of an eagle helps it to catch and grip its prey.

English

Some mixed results for your composition. The marks are pretty extreme. Some of you have improved and elaborated on your writing details. Good job. The other half of you were not serious and wrote a whole lot of unrealistic and irrelevant details that pulled your marks extremely low. It is important that you be realistic and relevant in your story.

We will complete filing by next week and start going through the revision practice papers next week. Work on your paper 1 over the weekend by revising.

Have a good weekend,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Adaptations for Survival

Dear all,

We have begun our oral examinations. All the best for your remaining oral examinations, be it Chinese or English. Be confident and express yourself well.

Today, we talked about our new Science topic, adaptations. Here is a recap:

Adaptations are essential for survival of organisms. Organisms have different behavioural adaptations to suit the environment they survive in. You need to know the two types of adaptations and they are behavioural adaptations (How an organism behave) and structural adaptations (Body parts of an organism that allow it to adapt).

Behavioural adaptations can refer to actions like hunting in packs, staying near an organism's own shelter/home, growing towards sunlight, etc. It has to do with how an organism moves or behaves in order to adapt and survive.

Structural adaptations refer to the body parts of an organism that allows it to adapt to the environment for survival. For example, crocodiles have strong powerful jaws to rip apart its larger preys. Dolphins have streamlined bodies to move quickly in the water and overcome water resistance. Cheetahs have strong hind legs to run at a quick speed.

We also talk about the skills of drawing a food web:

  • Identify how many organisms there are first.
  • Next, Identify the producer, write it down and circle it.
  • Then, draw the arrows of the organisms step by step.
As the examinations kick in, please pace yourself and learn to control your stress. Do learn to relax and work on time management. This is something you will have to learn as you go along. Do note that there will be an increase in homework, especially during your examinations period due to the revision papers that we will require you to do at home. You need to understand that this is expected and normal. We are not giving you homework after homework every single day. When it is time to work hard, take the extra effort which will determine how well you can fare. Remember what I said! What you have today, you might not have it tomorrow unless you work hard for it. Good results don't drop from the sky. It is a result of one's own hard work and effort you put in consistently!!! Study hard!

We will do filing next week in time for your examinations. Compositions will be given back tomorrow.

Last note to end off the blog post. Please return back the walkathon cards tomorrow or next monday latest. Thank you for all your efforts. Whatever amount you might have, thank you again from the heart.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong
