Dear all,

As the Science paper is only 1 day away, here are some important notes topic by topic.
Do go back to revise through the vocabulary words for each topic as it is important to note the spellings!

[Cells]
Definition: A cell is the simplest/basic unit of life.

There are two types of cell - Animal & Plant

We use a microscope to look at cells. *NOTE THE PARTS and FUNCTIONS of the microscope

There are 5 parts to the plant cell and 3 parts to the animal/human cell.
*NOTE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN the two types of cells.
*NOTE THE PARTS of the ANIMAL and PLANT cells and their FUNCTIONS!!!

Photosynthesis requires the presence of sunlight, carbon dioxide and water. In turn, they produce Oxygen and Glucose (plant sugar)
Hence, the cell part known as the Chloroplast is important for photosynthesis!

There are single-cell organisms such as paramecium, amoeba and yeast.

There are also multi-cell organisms such as giraffe, zebras, etc....

Cells can reproduce through cell division in which it splits itself up into two daughter cells from the given parent cell.

[Family Tree]

Take note that paternal = father's side and maternal = mother's side

A circle represents the female, while a square represents the male.

You need to know how to interpret and draw the family tree.

[Reproduction in Plants]

Plants reproduce to ensure continuity of their own kind, same as animals and humans.

POLLINATION --> FERTILIZATION --> FRUITS --> SEED DISPERSAL --> GERMINATION

Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma.

There can be cross pollination or self pollination.

A FLOWER WITH THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE PARTS (Stigma, style, ovary and ovules) can turn into a fruit upon fertilization.

BUT a flower without the female reproductive parts cannot fertilize and turn into a fruit.

TAKE NOTE OF THE PARTS OF THE FLOWER AND THE FUNCTIONS!!!

MALE = Anther + filament
FEMALE = Stigma, style, ovary and ovules.

FERTILIZATION is the fusion of the pollen grains with the egg cell or ovules of the female reproductive parts of the flower.

A NON-FLOWERING plant does not have fertilization and pollination. Instead, they reproduce from spores. E.g Birds' nest fern and fungi.

During germination, the seed coat grows first --> ROOTS --> SHOOT --> SEED LEAVES.
Germination requires air, warmth and water!!!

A plant will always grow towards the sunlight.

Seed dispersal
Seed dispersal is when seeds are carried away from the parent plant either deliberately or accidentally. Often, animals are involved in dispersal, as when ants, squirrels and mice, collect and store seeds (including nuts). If the store is forgotten, or the animal dies, the seeds might germinate. Other animals may eat a plant's fruit and scatter the undigested seeds in their dung. Finally, some seeds are sticky or have hooks that catch on to fur and feathers, so the seed can hitch-hike to a new location. The seeds of some plants are carried by other vectors such as wind and water.

TAKE NOTE OF THE METHODS OF SEED DISPERSAL, the characteristics and examples!!!

Here are the answers for SECTION B of the common test practice paper. please check and do your corrections.

ALL THE BEST STUDENTS!!! =)

Tips for Paper 1

Dear all,

Tomorrow is the first big day of term 1! Your common test first paper - English Paper 1.

It consists of your situational writing and a composition (choose from either picture composition or continuous writing)

Situational Writing

- Please go and look through your 3 situational writing exercises which you have completed.

- Answer all points. Look carefully!!! Some points may have 2 parts! So please read carefully! Now it is time to discard all your bad reading habits. Be serious and put in 100% effort.

- Answer in complete sentences! Link all your sentences together.

- Remember your salutation (person you are addressing to) and to sign off with your name.

Composition

- If you are choosing the picture composition, please make sure your plot (main event of the composition) describes the picture accurately. That includes all the characters in the story, the items they are using and the place. Do not get them wrong or leave out any of these details at all. YOU NEED TO BE SPECIFIC.

- If you are choosing the continuous writing, please revolve your story around the given scenario. Introduce your story, continue with the plot and problems and come up with a proper conclusion.

- BE REALISTIC!

- Apply your vocabulary words if you can.

- FEELINGS! DESCRIPTION OF CHARACTERS! Introduce your place, time and weather! PROPER CONCLUSION. these are all important!

- Watch your tenses and spelling. Read to see if your sentence sounds logical and correct. Do not string too many sentences into one big sentence. Use and apply your full stop (.) correctly and appropriately.

LAST NOTES!

- All the best for Paper 1 tomorrow! Read through your 1st two compositions to work on your mistakes. Do not commit the same mistakes. If you have any major errors like no paragraphing, spelling and punctuation errors, etc, please make sure they do not appear again tomorrow on your papers!

- It is not about finishing FIRST or doing as quickly as you can.

- It is about QUALITY of your work!

- Read through, understand, PLAN your composition, JOT DOWN NOTES like the setting (place, time, weather), characters, description of characters, feelings of characters, PLOT/EVENTS, problems faced and CONCLUSION / SOLUTION!

2 LONG POSTS!

Dear all,

there are 2 long posts today. So check back to the right for the 2nd post as the 1st post is rather long and takes up the whole page.

Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong
HOW TO WRITE A GOOD COMPOSITION!

Instructions

1
Select a topic. If possible, choose one that you can write about easily. During exams, you can choose either a picture composition or continuous writing. Choose the topic that you feel best suits your writing ability and has the most room for growth of ideas and descriptions.

2
Prewrite your essay on a graphic organizer. This may seem like extra work, but it will make the essay easier to write. A simple organizer that helps you outline your ideas by paragraph is the most effective. Under each paragraph's main idea write three supporting details. Writing in complete sentences is not necessary on the organizer. Use phrases that can be developed into sentences when you write the essay.
However, during your tests, you will not have the luxury of time to do this. However, you can plan your setting (place, time, characters, weather), introduction, plot and conclusion!

3
Write the introduction. Introduce the setting, purpose of the story and the characters. Your introduction should serve as a backdrop and link to the plot. It should link the plot well.

4
Write two or three paragraphs that support the main topic. You can have the main plot followed by additional complications. Are there any problems that may arise during the development of the plot?

5
Describe the ending and solution to the problems. What happened in the end? What happened to the characters? How did they feel? Any lessons to be learned? If any. Finish the essay with a concluding paragraph that summarizes the essay.

6
Proofread and revise the essay. Check spelling and punctuation first, then read sentences again to check subject and verb agreement. Get a friend or family member to read your composition and give you feedback about points that need clarifying.

KEY POINTS TO NOTE!

- Look through the vocabulary work I have provided the good words and revise through them. You might use them during your composition.

- Be as descriptive as you can. Describe the characters! Include their feelings too! Be detailed!

- BUT PLEASE BE REALISTIC. It must be logical and not too far-fetched.

- If you are not able to string together good vocabulary words/phrases, do not worry. Writing in simple sentences are sometimes better than trying to apply vocabulary words/phrases wrongly.

- Take note of your punctuation. Do not string too many sentences altogether and use commas all the way. There needs to be a full stop in between.

Take note of your tenses!!!

Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

2 more days to Common Test

Dear all,

Hope you had a refreshing weekend. It is time to head back to school to begin a new week and it is common test week! It will get stressful but please remember to take time to relax, breathe and motivate yourself. Study hard and you will see your rewards of your hard work when you receive your papers back.

TARGETS FOR THE CLASS:

- 100% passes for English

- 100% passes for Science

Please remember, I am not expecting you to reach for the stars and for all to get 100% A or A*. Of course, that should be what you must be aiming for. But for now, we should all get our basic concepts correct and at least, have a pass for our papers. We build our way up and improve ourselves bit by bit.

You have all constructed your own targets that you want to achieve at the start of the year. So now, work towards it. It is not a target for nothing. I believe in all of you. So you must all believe in yourselves too.

Jiayou!

REMINDERS!

- $3 diary money to be handed up by Wednesday!

- English files to be handed up back to me by Friday (24th Feb)

- Supplementary lessons are still carried out for this week. Do not be absent!

Dear parents,

Please help to supervise your kids in their homework as it is important for revision for their common tests. A few students have not been attempting even a single question for their practice papers and this is disappointing. We need every student to put in their best efforts. Together, we can make a difference. Lets' strive to building their foundation for their PSLE right now! I seek all your understanding to help them out in their homework, especially in the completion and passing up of homework on time!!!

Now that they have their diary, if you have any queries or comments, do feel free to communicate with me through the diary. It is another good mode of communication.

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Dispersal of Seeds

Dear all,

Important Announcement

- Please bring your $3 for the school diary by 22nd Feb!

- Please bring along your library card or EZLINK card for borrowing of books tomorrow.

- Spelling test for Unit 3 tomorrow (FRI)

- Bring your English and Science files tomorrow for filing!

Today's learning points!

We learned about seeds dispersal.

Seeds disperse in order to prevent overcrowding and competing with parent plants for survival.

Overcrowding plants will be tall and thin. On the other hand, if a seed is given enough space to grow, it will have thick stems.

There are 4 methods of seed dispersal.
1. By wind [e.g Angsana, Lalang]
2. By water [e.g Coconut, Mangrove]
3. By animals [e.g Mango, Mimosa]
4. By themselves (Explosion or splitting) [e.g Sunflower, Peas]

For english,

We learned one important point for Synthesis and transformation.

Unless ________(Positive Statement)____, _______(negative statement)_________.

__________(negative statement)___________ unless ____________(positive statement)___.

Example.

You do not take care of yourself. You will fall sick.

Unless you take care of yourself, you will fall sick.
You will fall sick unless you take care of yourself.

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Motivate yourself.

Dear students,

I hope that you have learned something valuable from Nick Vujicic and that is having the motivation to do great in life.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8ZuKF3dxCY
(Watch it when you are going through 'bad' days. It will motivate and inspire you)

It is not about looking at 'things you do not have in life' but valuing what you have right now. With all that you have, strive hard and do your best. Make your life count. Make primary school life count. You do not get the chance to turn back and regret not working hard enough.

English Paper 1 starts next Wednesday (22nd Feb)

Study hard!

Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Importance of Homework

Dear Parents,

One of the class rules is #4 : Pass up all work on time!

Students have also created their own rules and one of the rules is to hand up work on time.

As of late, I have come to realise that passing up homework on time has been an alarming issue at hand. It is week 7 and I have repeated pupils not passing up their work on time.

Now that the school diary is for sale, do get your child to purchase one and to record down the important reminders and homework for the day.

As such, I can communicate with you through the diary to give feedback, drop notes and answer queries. It is another good platform.

Do take the time to look through your children's diary or check with them on their homework for the day. Homework is not to add stress to the child. It is to help them apply what they have learned into practice. Also, it allows me to assess their learning and help them improve.

Rule #5, do your best in everything you do!

I want each child to succeed and homework is the basic aspect of a student that he needs to be able to master.

As such, I am looking at spending time (after school) with repeated students who do not pass up their homework on time. I am looking to implement this action from today onwards. And if I call you up during school hours to request for your child to stay back with me to finish up his homework under my supervision, please do not be alarmed. I hope to seek all of your kind understanding. :)

Thank you each and every parent,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Direct and Indirect Speeches

Dear all,

Today's Important Topic!

1. Direct Speech

We may quote the actual words of the speaker. This method is called Direct Speech. We use the punctuation of ".............."

2. Indirect Speech

We may report what he said without quoting his exact words. This method is called Indirect Speech or Reported Speech.

Example:

• Direct: Clinton said, “I am very busy now.”
• Indirect: Clinton said that he was very busy then.

Words which get changed when the Direct Speech is changed into Indirect Speech.

• Now becomes then
• Here becomes there
• Today becomes that day
• Tomorrow becomes the next day
• Yesterday becomes the previous day
• Last night becomes the previous night
• This becomes that
• These becomes those
• Our becomes their
• last weekend becomes the previous weekend
• next week becomes the following week

This is especially important for synthesis and transformation! DO NOTE!!!

Yours Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Week 7 begins

Dear all,

Homework for the week

- English composition Unit 2

- Science Family Tree Worksheet

Learning Points

Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of a flower to the stigma of a flower.

There are two ways of pollination: Cross pollination and self pollination.

Cross pollination involves the transfer of anther from a flower to the stigma of another flower.

Self pollination occurs with the transfer of anther to the stigma WITHIN the same flower.

Seeds --> Seedling --> Young Plant --> Adult Plant --> Flower --> Fruits --> Seeds

The cycle repeats itself.

Pollination and fertilisation occurs ONLY IN FLOWERING PLANTS.

Do check out this website.

http://www.neok12.com/Pollination.htm

For English,

We have started on a new topic "My Amazing Adventures"

From characters, we now move on to one of the events / actions that they encounter and that is adventures.

Adventures can involve mystery, happiness, sorrow, disappointment and fear.

We are looking at the story of Gulliver's Travels for this topic. It is an important theme for composition writings. Look out for the vocabulary words as you read through the topic.

You can check out these websites which are relevant to our topic:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulliver's_Travels

You can watch the full animated version here. It is over 1 hour long! Do seek your parents' permission first or you can watch it bit by bit. :)

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Dear Parents,

As of late, some pupils have perpetually forgotten to complete (on time) or bring their homework for lessons. Can i seek your help in getting the students to complete their work? Do monitor and check through each night with your children. Homework is important for me to assess the students' understanding. It also helps to apply what they have learned in class to daily work. With practice, comes perfection. Thank you :)

Family trees and reproduction in plants

Dear all,

Today we learned about how to draw and interpret a family tree. Family trees allow u to trace our relatives and next of kins on both maternal and paternal side.

Maternal refers to the mother's side (m for mummy)
Paternal refers to the father's side (p for papa)

We use a circle symbol to represent the females and
A square symbol to represent the males.

Please also indicate the name of the relative on your family tree. E.g uncle, auntie, grandmother, etc.

We also learn about reproduction in plants.

Important concept for today!!!

You need to know that pollen grains are transferred to the stigma by wind or by insects.

The male parts of the flower are the anther and filament.

The female parts of the flower are the stigma, style, ovary and ovules.

Science common test topics are from units of life - cells, cycles - from parents to young and reproduction in plants.
You WILL also be tested on primary 3 and 4 topics so do start yr revision.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Homophones

Dear all,

Learning points of the day!

HOMONYMS are words that are spelt the same, sound alike but have different meanings.

HOMOPHONES are a type of homonym that also sound alike and have different meanings, but have different spellings.

HOMOGRAPHS are words that are spelt the same but have different meanings and are pronounced differently.

- There are phrasal verbs that carry a specific meaning. These are fixed and are useful for your grammar and comprehension cloze sections of the test paper.

e.g take up an assignment, on sale, in use, over the moon (meaning happy), pull through a difficult period, take on an opponent.

SITUATIONAL WRITING

Always read the task.

Answer the questions / points in complete sentences.

Link the sentences together.

Always start off with "How are you today?", "I would like to tell / inform you about ......."

End off with either

"Yours Sincerely"
"Your name" (for formal writing)

or just your

"Your Name" (for informal writing)

Be specific!

USING WHO, WHOM & WHOSE

Examples:

We knew the actress who starred in the movie. subject of adjective clause

They hired the man whom we interviewed last week. object of adjective clause

She knew the family whose house we bought. "Whose" shows possession of house.

You can do this for practice. Practice makes perfect!

http://www.englishpage.com/minitutorials/who_whom_1.htm

REMINDERS!

- Bring your cycles workbook tomorrow with your homework completed.

- Please hand up your donation drive tickets by tomorrow (8/2) Wed

LEARNING POINTS OF THE DAY

- Do not bring your disagreements out of the classroom. Please talk things out during arguments, however small they may be. Small things may lead to big things.
Rule #1 WE ARE A FAMILY!

:)

Have a good day,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong

Life Cycles

Dear all,

Key learning points of the day

For Science,

Living things reproduce to ensure continuity of their own kinds.

Parents pass on their characteristics to their young when they reproduce.

Only natural physical traits are passed on.

Sometimes, certain traits may skip a generation or two.

Life cycles are important as they help us understand how humans or plants reproduce to ensure continuity of their own kind.

For English,

We learn about characters being important to stories with the continuity of the Dorothy's adventures in the Wizard of Oz.

Musicals are movies that showcases singing and music instead of the usual conversations.

when we use a 'verb' after the word 'to', it must be in the PRESENT TENSE and SINGULAR form.

e.g He likes to run. He wants to go to the beach.

Please take note of this common mistake.

Reminders

-Unit 2 spelling test tomorrow!!!

-Return your sold / unsold donation tickets by next Wednesday (8th FEB)

-Bring your LIFE CYCLES textbook for Science tomorrow.

Thank You,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong.
