End of Extra Holiday Supplementary Lessons

Dear all,

Thank you for the wonderful attendance during the March Holidays for the extra lessons. I hoped you have learnt much and manage to understand new concepts posed to you. As we move on to the end of term 1 and the beginning of term 2, we are moving up one notch in terms of intensity and urgency. This coming term, you will have listening comprehension and oral examinations. Do have some practice on them. I want to see an increase in your marks now that you have truly settled down and began to grasp the concepts and familiarize yourself with the P6 syllabus.

Congratulations to Team Brennan and Team Michael for winning the top two groups placing. Congratulations to Team Matthew for their third placing and for Team Yiling, you missed by just a bit. Nonetheless, well done to each and everyone.

Student of the term: Michael

Group leader of the term: Matthew

Let us recap the main learning points of the supplementary lessons for the past 2 days.

English

We went through the essentials of writing a composition. Common themes for composition writing include accidents, fire, robbery, theft and being lost in a place. Do look out for useful phrases and vocabulary words on these themes.

We talked about the importance of planning the composition first such as giving the characters a name and writing from the point of view of the one of the characters in the picture given. Picture composition is generally easier to write if you take on the role of one of the characters in the picture. Remember to always elaborate on your points.

We did the focus writing on introduction using the strategy of a flashback. Flashbacks are good tools to be used to start off a story provided that you make the reference back to the flashback at the end of your composition.

example:

INTRODUCTION

As I looked at the picture of Tom and I, sad memories flooded my mind and I was reminded of the horrifying accident that occurred exactly two years ago. Not only did I suffered permanent scars to my cheeks, Tom also died in the accident. Tom was my brother whom I was very close to......

It was a bright, sunny day....................................

CONCLUSION

This accident constantly replayed on my mind and I had a phobia of riding on motorbikes ever since. This incident would forever be etched into my memories.

We also went through the basic essentials of grammar such as what nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and prepositions are. Here is the upload of the list of words that are prepositions. You need to work on identifying and understanding prepositions and conjunctions for grammar cloze.

We ended off English with the situational writing exercise on report writing. No matter what structure of situational writing you will receive, always identify the role and audience first. Then, note the tone of the writing. When writing to a person of higher authority, you need to be formal.

Science

We went through the revision worksheet 1 and highlighted the importance of topics like materials, magnets and heat. A few important concepts to remember:

  • Different materials have different rates of  absorbency of water.
  • POOR conductors of heat do not conduct away heat easily and are good to be used to keep items warmer.
  • GOOD conductors of heat conduct heat away easily.
  • When we want to find out the aim of an experiment, always look at the VARIABLE TO BE CHANGED and compare it to the PROCESS OF THE EXPERIMENT.
We then finish up Science with the next activity in the workbook on using ball bearings to reduce friction. We cannot remove the friction totally but what we can do is to use the ball bearings so that it reduces friction and allow more work to be done. In this case, the ball bearings reduces friction between the two surfaces so that they do not come into DIRECT contact with each other.

  • Less friction = more work to be done = more efficient!
Work hard and play hard,
Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong
