Tips for Paper 1

Dear all,

Tomorrow is the first big day of term 1! Your common test first paper - English Paper 1.

It consists of your situational writing and a composition (choose from either picture composition or continuous writing)

Situational Writing

- Please go and look through your 3 situational writing exercises which you have completed.

- Answer all points. Look carefully!!! Some points may have 2 parts! So please read carefully! Now it is time to discard all your bad reading habits. Be serious and put in 100% effort.

- Answer in complete sentences! Link all your sentences together.

- Remember your salutation (person you are addressing to) and to sign off with your name.

Composition

- If you are choosing the picture composition, please make sure your plot (main event of the composition) describes the picture accurately. That includes all the characters in the story, the items they are using and the place. Do not get them wrong or leave out any of these details at all. YOU NEED TO BE SPECIFIC.

- If you are choosing the continuous writing, please revolve your story around the given scenario. Introduce your story, continue with the plot and problems and come up with a proper conclusion.

- BE REALISTIC!

- Apply your vocabulary words if you can.

- FEELINGS! DESCRIPTION OF CHARACTERS! Introduce your place, time and weather! PROPER CONCLUSION. these are all important!

- Watch your tenses and spelling. Read to see if your sentence sounds logical and correct. Do not string too many sentences into one big sentence. Use and apply your full stop (.) correctly and appropriately.

LAST NOTES!

- All the best for Paper 1 tomorrow! Read through your 1st two compositions to work on your mistakes. Do not commit the same mistakes. If you have any major errors like no paragraphing, spelling and punctuation errors, etc, please make sure they do not appear again tomorrow on your papers!

- It is not about finishing FIRST or doing as quickly as you can.

- It is about QUALITY of your work!

- Read through, understand, PLAN your composition, JOT DOWN NOTES like the setting (place, time, weather), characters, description of characters, feelings of characters, PLOT/EVENTS, problems faced and CONCLUSION / SOLUTION!

PLAN PLAN PLAN!!!!

All the best.

My expectations for the class - 100% PASSES!

Sincerely,
Mr Nelson Ong
