Homophones

Dear all,

Learning points of the day!

HOMONYMS are words that are spelt the same, sound alike but have different meanings.

HOMOPHONES are a type of homonym that also sound alike and have different meanings, but have different spellings.

HOMOGRAPHS are words that are spelt the same but have different meanings and are pronounced differently.

- There are phrasal verbs that carry a specific meaning. These are fixed and are useful for your grammar and comprehension cloze sections of the test paper.

e.g take up an assignment, on sale, in use, over the moon (meaning happy), pull through a difficult period, take on an opponent.

SITUATIONAL WRITING

Always read the task.

Answer the questions / points in complete sentences.

Link the sentences together.

Always start off with "How are you today?", "I would like to tell / inform you about ......."

End off with either

"Yours Sincerely"
"Your name" (for formal writing)

or just your

"Your Name" (for informal writing)

Be specific!

USING WHO, WHOM & WHOSE

Examples:

We knew the actress who starred in the movie. subject of adjective clause

They hired the man whom we interviewed last week. object of adjective clause

She knew the family whose house we bought. "Whose" shows possession of house.

You can do this for practice. Practice makes perfect!

LEARNING POINTS OF THE DAY

- Do not bring your disagreements out of the classroom. Please talk things out during arguments, however small they may be. Small things may lead to big things.

Sincerely,
